12/22/2023 0 Comments Persona 4 yu figureThe dude is such a blank slate and so variable (assuming I used that word correctly) that anything could've happened. Honestly, I think that's part of the reason Izanami picked him as one of her chess pieces. So then we get to answer why he is the way he is: his circumstances are straightforward, so he in turn is straightforward. He's just some kid having to stay with family for a year, so his dialogue reflect that honestly. Yu is very much normal, or at least starting off with more realistic circumstances. The only thing we know about him is that his parents work overseas. If I were him, I'd be running my mouth too to be honest □□, having to take heat for trying to protect someone is bound to make them be at least a little cynical.īut Yu is just.here. Jokers dialogue reeks of smartass and wit, which again makes sense given his circumstances. His parents were quick to ship him off to Tokyo to serve his sentence. Joker pretty much led a normal life, school clubs and everything until he encountered that assault. A lot of the time you can have him look on the bright side or being a little melancholy about things, which both would make sense given his upbringing. Even though he doesn't know that, everything else revolving around his life explains his dialogue choices well. Minato was an orphan, had some family left and was mostly bouncing around from home to home, and has a part of Death sealed inside of him. Why is he the way he is ya know? You dont know much about him at all, especially compared to the other 2 protagonists. I think it's this air of mystery around him. With that, it would be very easy to dismiss him, but I dunno, theres something about him that makes me like the character as a whole. The most you get from Yu is some snarkiness or a joke here and theren The most you see this man emote is if Nanako is involved to be completely honest. His dialogue options dont show quite as much personality as the other two (3 if we count FeMC) protagonists, and this is especially apparent in the anime where Yu is very much here for the ride with some emotion here and there that's not just his normal poker face. I like to think of him more as a blank slate as opposed to Minato/Door-kun and Joker. My boy Narukami! He's a very interesting case between the, let's call it the Social Sim Trilogy. I fucking love it so much, it saddens me he's not seen as autistic by more people. Lastly of all: Yes, Yu Narukami's high-up on my list of Persona Characters Who I Headcanon As Autistic For Personal Reasons, due to his intense awkwardness with social cues, how blunt he is, the seeming special interest he takes in helping people in the Animation, his seemingly muted to wildly intense displays of emotion, etc. There's also the Accomplice Ending and what would lead Narukami to do that, which I could talk for hours about. You look me in the eyes and tell me you didn't start trying to hold back tears when Yu started crying in the anime or when he nearly forced his way into the TV once he found out Nanako was kidnapped.Īnd there's also the whole inferred plotline with him being a "city boy" - he was left alone in the city, and after making so many friends in Inaba, his fear of being alone again is so fucking potent that in the Animation we even see him manifest a Shadow over it, a Shadow so horrified at the thought of leaving his friends that he sounds legitimately choked up. And JYB's voice acting as him in the anime, ESPECIALLY during the events of December, is fucking god-tier. I mean, yes, a bunch of the Persona protagonists have that quality (like Minako) but none of them really quite embody it quite like Yu does, in my eyes. Yu Narukami is a really, really good player-led protagonist in terms of not just how much personality he has in his responses, but also just how he's represented in Persona 4's spinoffs - I can really see how this guy would be the sort of guy to go out of his way to befriend everybody, even beings as inconceivable as a fox and the serial killer he's trying to catch.
